Testing takes a special type of person to do it well, someone just like you. Someone who is curious, who wants to explore and poke. Someone who is methodical and can plan, execute and enjoys the detail along with being creative.

There is one aspect that we believe is incredibly important that is sometimes overlooked. To be a truly great tester you have to have dollops of empathy. Why? Because you are basically going to be telling people that their babies are ugly and we haven’t met anyone who likes that, yet.

By this point, we are expecting that you have already opened up the console in the browser on our website or looked at the source code and started having a poke. Hopefully you have found an easter egg or two? You probably have a few things that you want to tell us and that is great.

You are probably already full of questions as testers always are (it’s that curiosity coming out in you). Let’s try and answer them for you:

Do we have testers already? Yes, yes we do. There is a mix of experience in the test team but don’t worry, we have experienced testers that you can learn from and others who you can also help grow.

What sort of software needs to be tested? Where do we start? Web applications, API’s, Mobile apps, Integrations, Desktop apps, Bot’s, Machine Learning models (well the interfaces with humans etc), VR and AR and everything in between. There isn’t one product or domain, there are lots. We span many sectors, have projects large and small and are always pushing the boundaries.

What type of testing is there? Depends - yep, you can tell we are developers, can’t you 😉 Automated testing, functional testing, exploratory testing, load testing, security testing [let’s just call it testing].

For those that like a list, our next tester will learn and develop in these areas:

  • Agree and follow test standards
  • Be great at exploratory and scripted testing
  • Be an excellent communicator - happy talking to clients and techies alike
  • Be part of the creative process - your job is to help us build great things, not just break them
  • Approach every project from the user’s point of view and ask “what happens if . . .?”
  • Be thorough, organised and focused on the detail
  • Manage tasks, working to timeframes, budgets and project plans
  • Learn a range of testing tools and know what to use and when
  • Understanding of test automation, when and when not to automate
  • Be aware of different automation frameworks, and key advantages and disadvantages of each
  • An understanding of a programming language

What languages do we use? If you hadn’t worked it out already, we are a Microsoft shop. Our primary language is C# so much of the automated testing is in C#. We do use a variety of languages and frameworks for testing though so have no fear!

Is Razor full of blokes? Unfortunately there are more men than women at the moment. This doesn’t mean that women aren’t at Razor, they are! We have women in test, development, project management, operations, marketing and PR. We even have a Women at Razor group.

OK - sounds amazing, it looks great from the outside, does it pay well? Sure, we look after you. What we don’t do is advertise a specific salary band. There is a reason for this; we don’t like to stick people in bands or “boxes”. We don’t want to exclude or put anyone off from applying.
