What matters most when it comes to being an account director?

We might well be wrong, and we would love to learn a different perspective; to us, it’s all about being authentic and building rapport that breeds solid trusted relationships.

We are looking for someone to join our growing team of Account Directors that both engages with new customers and works with existing accounts. There is no split between new business and existing - we don’t really see much difference. When you boil it down to its raw parts, it’s all just people getting on with people.

Now let’s get to the most important bit of this - you! You may currently be in a similar role looking for a new adventure or the next challenge. You may be in a slightly different role but have a passion and the traits to explore something new. We don’t expect you to have a degree or have 10 years of experience doing exactly this. We don’t expect you to have a little black book and “know everything”. We are looking for the following traits:

  • The ability to listen - really listen, purposeful listening.
  • Empathy; be able to understand someone else’s perspective.
  • To be able to build rapport. One of those people that everyone knows will easily get along with people.
  • Be inquisitive and get excited about technology.

Let’s delve into each of these in a bit more detail.

The Ability to Listen Sounds easy, right? It’s not. When was the last time that you listened so deeply that you didn’t have anything to respond with? See, we told you it was hard!

We aren’t looking for this 100% of the time, it doesn’t always help in conversations. We are looking for an understanding that it is important to listen and having the ability to sit back and enjoy the conversation and deeply understand.

Empathy Another one that is easy to say and hard to do. Being able to project yourself into someone else’s perspective to better understand and to drive better questions. Empathy in combination with the ability to listen is a truly great skill.

Rapport When we say rapport, we don’t mean the type of rapport that a car salesperson might conjure - you know the one, “oh you love golf, I love golf too!” when they don’t know the difference between a golf club or bat! We are being a little harsh here and it’s only in the call of painting an extreme picture. When you combine the ability to listen with empathy - you can then begin to build authentic and genuine rapport with someone.

Inquisitiveness and Technology What is the cure for boredom? Being inquisitive. Nobody who is inquisitive can ever be bored. You don’t have to be a technology legend, you just need to be interested in it - what it does and the effect that it has rather than how it does what it does. Do you get excited about a new wearable or a feature update on your phone that makes your life a little easier? How about a RoboVac or VR headset? Sure you do and that is why you are still reading this!
